Change PowerPoint
size and background
Slide size, background, and orientation are easy to change, but they can affect every layout in the deck. This guide shows the safe order, and how to avoid formatting cleanup by generating cleaner decks in GeneratePPT.
Safe order
- Choose slide size before adding detailed content
- Use Format Background for deck-wide background changes
- Use portrait only when the delivery format needs it
- Regenerate or simplify layouts if the deck becomes hard to repair
Change slide size
In PowerPoint, slide size is usually under the Design tab. Choose the common widescreen or standard option, or use custom slide size for a specific format.
When PowerPoint asks how to scale existing content, review the result carefully. Dense slides may need manual cleanup.
Change the background
Use Format Background to apply a solid color, gradient, picture, or other background style. If you want the change everywhere, apply it to all slides or update the slide master.
Single slide
Use Format Background on the selected slide when only one slide needs the change.
Whole deck
Use Apply to All or the Slide Master when the design should be consistent.
Switch to portrait
Portrait decks are useful for posters, handouts, vertical screens, or social formats. But most presentation rooms expect widescreen, so change orientation only when the output demands it.
If you need a vertical social asset, consider exporting slides and adapting them intentionally instead of forcing a normal deck into portrait late.
Avoid late cleanup
If the deck becomes messy after resizing, the fastest route may be to regenerate from the source material with a clearer format request.
In GeneratePPT, include the intended format and audience in the prompt, then export once the structure is stable.
Prompt example
- Create a clean 10-slide widescreen deck for a board update.
- Use short titles, minimal text, and layouts that will survive PowerPoint editing.
- Keep the deck readable on a projector.
